Most likely your first memory of doing pull ups was in grade school gym class.  The pull up has been a staple exercise to demonstrate ones physical fitness for about as long as these things were even talked about.  True it’s an awesome exercise and one that requires a good amount of upper body strength, but when done correctly the pull up can be one of the best upper body exercises you can do.  Even the best gloves for pull ups won’t get you to bust out a couple dozen of em, but they definitely can’t hurt!

Most “pulling exercises” require an incredible amount of grip strength.
